Open Position – Optical Lab Technician

The career of an Optical Lab Tech relies heavily on on-the-job training. Optical Lab Technicians, sometimes known as ophthalmic laboratory or medical technicians create prescription eyeglasses. They work closely with opticians and optometrist. New optical lab techs start as assistants and under direct supervision by an experienced technician and lab manager until they are knowledgeable enough to work by themselves. Position is responsible for producing customized eyeglass wear, make repairs and provide minor equipment maintenance in accordance. The lab tech will be required to complete orders and perform proper Quality Assurance on all orders and meet delivery times. Responsibilities

  • Obtain job orders from our opticians
  • Clarifies all requests to ensure accuracy
  • Mount materials or work pieces onto production equipment
  • Inspect lens blanks to detect flaws
  • Setup machines to polish, bevel, edge, or grind lenses, flats, blanks or other precision optical elements
  • Shape lenses appropriately to be inserted into frames
  • Clean finished lenses and eyeglasses
  • Proper Quality Assurance on orders
  • Adjust lenses and frames to correct alignment
  • Keeps a steady workflow to complete jobs in a timely matter
  • Informs leader on duty of equipment malfunctions, incomplete orders, incorrect lenes, breakages or delays on an order, Etc…
  • Provides maintenance and calibration to lab equipment
  • Basic housekeeping; clean and organize lenses, wash towels, dust, polish

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • High level of initiative and works well in a team environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Computer literate

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • High School diploma

Preferred: Prior experience as an Optician or in the optical industry

Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist all patients initially as they enter the clinic.
  • Answer the phones
  • Make Appointments and coordinate appointments
  • Check in patients & Check Out Patients (copy ID’s and insurance cards)
  • Insurance verifications
  • Direct patient flow through the rest of the clinic
  • Sale and dispense of  contact lenses
  • Checkout all clinic patients out.
  • Ensure all information is accurate
  • Reconcile all monies
  • Prepare referrals, work and/or school excuse letters, written prescriptions for providers to sign and staffs consult letters to primary care provider.
  • Order office supplies.

  • Strong sales ability

  • Oversight of the merchandising of frames, spectacle lenses and eyewear accessories
  • Ensure that the practice’s optical quality standards are met
  • Manage all aspects of eyewear orders and patient pickup
  • Work with patient in adaptation of their lenses
  • Adjustment and minor eyeglass repair
  • Interpretation of prescriptions written by ophthalmologists and optometrists
  • Collection of eye measurements including corneal width and thickness
  • Helping clients select eyeglass and lens treatments including tints and coatings
  • Creating work orders for lab technicians to ensure delivery of the proper lenses
  • Adjusting eyeglasses to ensure a proper fit
  • Repairing broken frames
  • Educating clients on proper eyeglass and contact lens care
  • Keeping track of orders, prescriptions, and inventory
